Shaping Boomless Designs
It’s a concept that’s been around for a long time: change the shape of the jet body and you can change the structure of the pressure waves as they come off the body. Restructure the pressure waves in the right way and you can decrease the concussion and noise to a level where people hear almost nothing as it passes over them.
This approach is backed by organizations including Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Partnership for AIR Transportation Noise and Emissions Reduction.
“Recent research on shaped sonic booms has indicated low boom designs are possible and result in significantly less objectionable signatures than classic booms of the 1960s to 1980s,” the organization stated. “Several recent studies have investigated designs with initial overpressures of no more than 0.3 lb/ft2, in contrast to Concorde’s typical 2 lb/ft2 N-wave signature — a dramatic reduction in noise levels. Due to this technological progress and resulting potential commercial and military application for the United States, supersonic aircraft operation and sonic boom signatures should be investigated for low boom designs.”
The Mechanics of a Sonic Boom
To back up a bit for readers who may not be familiar with this specific area of engineering, the mechanics of a sonic boom are fairly straightforward.
When a plane moves through the air, pressure waves are created both in front of and...

Ever since online tools made comparison shopping and discount-wrangling so much easier, everyone expects a deal when they take a trip.
So if bargain shopping is your travel strategy, there are plenty of places in America (and across the world) that offer value right now - as well as strategies for snagging deals in the future.
SMART STRATEGY #1: Economic meltdown
There are a few bright spots to the roiling economy and discounts on travel are one of them. Some destinations have suffered more than others in the last 18 months, which means that hotels there are more eager than ever to offer great value.
Las Vegas is the prime example, according to Budget Travel magazine editor Sean O'Neill: Occupancy rates are hovering below 80%, worryingly low for a resort area.
"It's an incredible deal right now, as the average nightly hotel rate dropped about a quarter in the past year," he says. "The convention business dropped off a cliff, and they added 14,000 more hotel rooms in the past 18 months. You can live like a high roller for very little money."
New hotels like the CityCenter complex and towers at the Golden Nugget or Planet Hollywood are ideal places to chase deals. The soon-to-open Cosmopolitan hotel, an almost-3,000-room addition to the CityCenter debuting in December, is offering a wraparound terrace suite and free sunset cocktails on the patio for just $300 a ...

How is working with Chinese clients/vendors/manufacturers?
I like to travel and discover the different kind of manufacturers and cities and meeting people from all levels and to understand how they live and work.
To communicate with suppliers is sometimes difficult, especially on a detailed technical level. As the sales person from a factory can usually communicate in wonderful English, their technical knowledge isn’t at a high level, so that can deliver some misunderstandings! So, we have made it a habit to communicate with a lot of pictures and renderings, together with bilingual ( English and Chinese) descriptions.
What is your opinion about industrial design in China?
I believe there is a great amount of creative talents in this country, but somehow the Chinese industry, especially the large companies, is not making good use of it yet. But I do see some interesting design work coming from a few local design studios that are influenced by western design process and management.
I think that the design industry in China now is quite similar to Korea’s industry from 10 years ago, when the Korean also made a lot of copycats. Many foreign designers went to Korea and they left their western design influence and as a result...

The largest consumer co-op in the UK is the Co-operative Group, which also includes The Co-operative Bank and the Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS).
The Co-operative Group accounts for more than 50% of total co-operative trade. The second largest is United, which trades from the Lake District down to the Midlands.
The Co-operative principles are successfully applied throughout the UK (and the rest of the world) to a vast array of co-operative enterprises; farming co-operatives, fishing co-operatives, retail co-operatives, manufacturing co-operatives, credit unions and even co-operatives providing internet access services.
Food retail is by far the largest sector of the co-op in the UK, accounting for almost half of all turnover. Despite intense competition in food retailing, UK retail co-operatives still have a total turnover of over £7.7 billion. One of the biggest whole food distributors in Britain, Yorkshire-based Suma, is a worker co-op. But although food stores are perhaps the most recognisable face of the Co-operative movement on the UK’s high streets, our co-operative picture is much, much bigger than that.
The UK's Co-operative Bank was founded in 1872 as the Loan and Deposit Department of the Co-operative Wholesale Society. The Co-operative Bank was the first major British financial organisation to announce an ethical policy in 1992, which clearly states with whom i...

Tallman commissioned only the best material available, including Milwaukee Cream City Brick, Italian Marble, and French Polished Mirror Glass. He also integrated all the modern conveniences of the time, like running water. The house an efficiently novel communication system, door bells, central heating and an indoor privy.
Lincoln-Tallman House, Janesville
Tallman was a functioning member of the newly-formed Republican Party, and his most famous houseguest was a young, aspiring presidential candidate named Abraham Lincoln. In 1859, Lincoln was in Wisconsin as part of a campaign speaking tour. He was invited to speak at the Wisconsin State Fair in Beloit and to stay with Mr. Tallman. All these years later, there is still something tangibly reverential and humbling about the actual room where Lincoln slept, and the bed that he slept two nights in.
The Lincoln-Tallman house is a living piece of American - and Wisconsin - history at its finest and most splendid, affording Lincoln diehards and casual history enthusiasts to retrace one scant step in the gigantic footsteps of an American political and intellectual luminary. It is a legitimate spot which connects visitors to Lincoln’s legacy.

When packing for an airline flight, itâs important to keep a few things in mind â how much you pack as well as what you pack.
Many airlines are strictly enforcing maximum carry-on and checked baggage allowances. Please check with your airline directly if you are unsure of the size and weight of baggage you are permitted to check or carry on.
What are the size and weight restrictions for my luggage?
- Since the Airlinesâ luggage restrictions are going through a recent period frequent change, you should check directly with your Airline as to size, weight and number of bags that you can check and carry-on.
- In many cases, the Airlines have added new limits on both carry-on and checked baggage. You should check, but most Airlines limit their carry-on bags to a range of 14″” to 16″” high, 21″” to 24″” wide, and 8″” to 9″” deep. The lower limits are for under seat storage and larger limits for the more generous overhead compartment. A 45″” total (height+width+depth) can be used as a basic guideline to see if your bag will be allowed as a carry-on.
- Most Airlines have a carry-on weight limit of 40 pounds and a checked baggage weight limit of 70 pounds.
- Some Airlines allow you a larger size and weight for your first bag, but have more restrictive limits for additional bags.
- Many Airlinesâ limits vary if y...

Even so, my particular liking is having the traditional AA Route Map as being the entire solution. To have the ability to plan my journey from start to end, discovering land marks and sights that we now have to see on the way in which through which, locate velocity cameras (danger areas) prior to I get away. To help me through out my journey, to go looking out petrol stations, as soon as once more velocity cameras, find different routes within the event of website visitors incidents along with gradual-transferring motorway traffic.
The AA Route Map supplies an excellent overview or birds eye view of the UK or Europe which is implausible to truly perceive the geography of the land,aa road map

More thoughts: Central Park is indeed huge, and has many different kinds of sites to see. You would do well just walking aimlessly, but I'd recommend taking a look at this map http://www.centralparknyc.org/maps/ and picking out some spots to aim for. There is, actually, a formal manicured garden, called the Conservatory Garden, up around Fifth Avenue and 105th Street. But I wouldn't call necessarily that one of the more special destinations. I'd recommend that you make sure to see the Bethesda Fountain, which is really the centerpiece of the park (there are bathrooms there, btw), and then walk over the picturesque Bow Bridge into the Ramble. The Ramble is a lovely wooded area that's frankly bucolic, although the paths are paved. The paths branch every fifty feet or so, but pretty much any you go, you'll end up somewhere nice. If you figure it out right, you could come out right near the Museum of Natural History. Do get out of Central Park before nightfall. Some parts are heavily populated by joggers for several hours after dusk, but other parts are totally deserted except for unspeakably dangerous characters. There's no need to make yourself figure out which is which!
I'm not an expert on vegetarian food. The classic recommendation is to look for Indian and/or Italian restaurants. But one good strictly vegetarian place that's on the Upper West Side is Cafe Blossom: http://www.blossomnyc.com/site/ And if you're in the Upper East Side (pe...
